Now, 32 Human lives depend on us : 6 months of Kalpavriksha

It has been 6 months since we launched Kalpavriksha. Many of you donated for this cause - some financially, some by selfless service and some by their wonderful wishes and brilliant ideas ! At the least, it was on us to give you a report showing what difference your contributions could achieve in these 6 months, and how the road ahead looks like...Read on.
Why are we doing it?
"A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs./year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings."
- McAliney, Mike. Arguments for Land Conservation: Documentation and Information Sources for Land Resources Protection, Trust for Public Land, Sacramento, CA, December, 1993

So, the reason why we are doing this is very simple - With every tree that survives, we support 2 human lives on this planet. It is quite blissfully satisfying, isn't it?

Our Launch
Kalpavriksha was launched in July 2016

1st Season (2016-17) Demographics
Planted Trees : 25
# Trees Survived : 16 (Wow ! We are supporting 32 lives on this planet now)
Survival Rate : 64%
Varieties : Mango, Neem, Jamun
Locations : 3 parks sorrounding our area

What we did well?
1/ Did not stop only at planting trees. Took the onus to help those saplings survive the tough initial conditions.
2/ Called for and assigned a few local volunteers to take care of watering a set of trees each.
3/ Since the trees were planted in parks where children play football and cricket, these trees badly needed protection. We manually handpicked stray bricks from the nearby areas and created protection walls for each and every tree.
4/ None of the trees died because of lack of watering or protection. Thats a great pat on our back.
5/ Opened the Kalpavriksha NGO and channels to accept donations.

Challenges and Path Ahead
1/ Kalpavriksha has a target of 1 million trees. At this rate, we cannot even get closer. We are pushing up our target from the current year's 25 trees to 100 trees (4 times increase) in the coming season starting 1st April 2017
2/ Nearby parks now mostly done, we need to spread out to futher areas. We are targeting plantation at road dividers in the New Delhi, Janak Puri C-5 Block area to complete our target of 100 in the coming season.
3/ We would need more helping hands to water and protect the trees for atleast 2 seasons before they become self sufficient. We will need to go door to door' seeking support and donations.
4/ We also intend to go online with our own website for Kalpavriksha, though we already have a facebook page.
5/ We intend to put laminated tags on each tree with the name of the donor (in case someone has donated / funded for a specific tree on a specific occasion), along with a few other details about the tree.
6/ We intend to get the trees in small pots and let them grow initially for 3 months in the pot - This makes it easier to water as well as protect them during their most susceptible period. Post that, we will break those pots and plant them at their intended place.

Meet your family
Nothing like meeting your family face to face. Here are snaps for a few of those 16 trees that were brave enough to survive the tough Delhi weather.
Many of them were grown from a seed, and we love them, not less than our children.
So, here you go...

Targets for 2017-18
Trees to be planted : 100
Survival Rate : 75%
Website : Go online
Committed volunteers : 05
